The Science of Well-Being Yale University Course Overview
The science of well-being is the study of how people experience and express their happiness. It is a multidisciplinary field including psychology, neuroscience, sociology, economics, and more. It seeks to understand the factors that contribute to our overall sense of well-being and how those factors can be manipulated in order for us to feel happier. The goal is not to make people feel better about themselves but rather to help them achieve greater fulfillment in their lives.
In this course, you’ll learn about the science of well-being and the factors that influence it. You’ll also explore what happens in our brains and bodies when we’re happy or sad, stressed or relaxed. You’ll learn how to be more mindful, how to use your mind to change your mood and behavior, and how to design your environment so that it promotes better mental health. The science of well-being has several areas of focus identifying what makes us happy (eudemonic well-being), identifying how we can make ourselves happier (hedonic well-being), and identifying what makes us unhappy (hedonic ill-being).
What is Happiness?
We are so often told that we need to be happier, but what does that mean? How can we become happier? Happiness is not just a feeling, it’s also something you can cultivate and grow as you go through life, but it requires some effort and time.
How can we get more out of our lives than just a fleeting moment of happiness? How can we live our best lives? There are many elements to the science of well-being, including positive emotions like joy and gratitude; satisfying relationships; physical health; and meaningful activities. These elements all work together to create a sense of well-being that can last for years after the initial event or experience has ended (e.g., moving across the country).
